Xianzhong Xu

Xu Xianzhong is a renowned biologist and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science who left the University of Michigan to join the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART) as a senior investigator with its Institute of Bio-Architecture and Bio-Interactions, confirmed in May 2026.

Xu's return came months after four researchers in his University of Michigan laboratory were accused by US authorities of "biological material smuggling." Three lab members were arrested and charged with conspiracy to smuggle biological materials, including concealed shipments related to roundworms, into the US, following the earlier arrest and deportation of another lab member who had sent the materials. Then-Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the case as part of "a long and alarming pattern of criminal activities committed by Chinese nationals under the cover of the University of Michigan." The charges against the researchers were later dropped following diplomatic talks between the US and China.
