Zhenfei Xie

Xie Zhenfei is a rising-star HIV vaccine researcher who left Harvard University's Ragon Institute to join China's State Key Laboratory of Virology and Biosafety in Wuhan in late 2025. His departure from one of the world's leading immunology research centres drew significant attention in the scientific community.

Xie made international headlines in May 2024 as the first author of a landmark paper published in Science that demonstrated how mRNA technology — the same platform used in COVID-19 vaccines — could be used to develop an effective HIV vaccine. The method works by training the immune system along multiple routes simultaneously, addressing the central challenge posed by HIV's rapid mutation rate.

His move to China is part of a broader trend of young rising-star researchers leaving Western institutions, drawn by expanding research opportunities and resources in China's rapidly growing biomedical sector.
