Summary

Julie Lockwood is an ecologist specializing in invasive species research who left Rutgers University to join McGill University's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in Montreal, Canada, as an Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada.

McGill announced her appointment, along with five other Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs recruited under the Government of Canada's $1 billion program, on August 27, 2026.

A Rutgers faculty member since 2004, Lockwood is known for her research on rising rates of species invasions and extinctions, work that she and colleagues have described as driving what they call "biotic homogenization" — a global-scale flattening of biodiversity. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Ecological Society of America, contributes to the United Nations' Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, and served as interim director of Rutgers' Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences from 2022 to 2023.
