Summary
Arthur Konnerth (born 1953) is a German neurophysiologist and world-leading neuroscientist who joined the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) on a full-time basis in January 2026, leaving his distinguished career at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He is a recipient of the prestigious Brain Prize (2015) and a member of the German National Academy of Sciences.
Konnerth pioneered the in vitro brain slice patch-clamp recording method that has become a cornerstone of modern neuroscience, and in 2003 introduced a groundbreaking two-photon microscopy imaging method that allows scientists to watch entire networks of brain cells in real time. These techniques have transformed the understanding of how the brain processes information and how Alzheimer's disease disrupts neural circuits.
At SZBL in Shenzhen, Konnerth continues his research on the molecular and cellular basis of brain function, with a particular focus on learning, memory, and Alzheimer's disease. He studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and earned his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in 1983.
