Summary

Sameer Sonkusale is a biomedical engineer who left Tufts University, where he held joint appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemical and Biological Engineering, to join McGill University's Department of Biomedical Engineering in Montreal, Canada, as one of six recipients of the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada.

Sonkusale earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, India, later receiving its Distinguished Alumni award, and completed his master's and PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He also held visiting positions at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital from 2011 to 2012, and at Harvard's Wyss Institute from 2018 to 2019.

At Tufts, Sonkusale directed an interdisciplinary lab focused on bioelectronics, biomedical devices, nanoscale sensors, and lab-on-chip systems, inventing devices including "smart bandages," "smart sutures," and an ingestible "lab-on-a-pill" diagnostic device recognized as one of the top biomedical innovations of 2020. At McGill, he will focus on bio-integrated medical technologies, including wearable, transdermal, and ingestible devices supporting closed-loop precision medicine. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER award and is a fellow of AIMBE.
