Thomas Mikael Oliveberg

Thomas Mikael Oliveberg is a Swedish biophysicist and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences who joined the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University in China in December 2025, leaving his tenured professorship at Stockholm University's Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics after nearly two decades. He is also a judge of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Oliveberg is a world-leading authority on protein folding and protein disease, with a particular focus on the molecular mechanisms behind neurodegenerative conditions including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He pioneered research into the biological "glitches" that cause proteins to misfold, leading to disease. He has received the Gustafsson Prize in Chemistry from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Arrhenius Medal, and the Svedberg Prize in Biochemistry.

At Guangxi Medical University, Oliveberg will conduct on-site research for three months each year, collaborating with the hospital's team on thalassemia, a blood disorder that is prevalent in the Guangxi region. His appointment is part of China's aggressive recruitment of global scientific talent to strengthen its biomedical research capabilities.
