Summary

Hu Yijuan is a Chinese biomathematician and biostatistician who returned to Peking University after nearly two decades in the United States, rejoining her alma mater's biostatistics department. Her move back to China reportedly took place roughly a year before it was widely reported in early 2025.

Hu was previously affiliated with Emory University's biostatistics department in Atlanta, Georgia — an institution that drew scrutiny in 2019 after abruptly dismissing two neuroscientists over alleged undisclosed ties to China, allegations the scientists denied. Her research applies statistical and mathematical methods to biological and genomic data.

Her return is part of a broader wave of Chinese-origin biostatisticians and biomathematicians choosing to rebuild their careers at top Chinese universities, drawn by expanding research infrastructure and growing unease among Chinese-origin scientists in the US research environment.
