Summary
Wu Meng is an award-winning Chinese mathematician who returned to China from Finland to join Hunan University, after solving a major part of Furstenberg's conjecture — a problem that had stumped mathematicians since the 1960s. He was previously an associate professor at the University of Oulu, one of Finland's largest universities.
In 2019, Wu solved the intersection part of Furstenberg's conjecture, which concerns the relationship between numbers represented in different base systems (binary vs. ternary). He published the proof as "A Proof of Furstenberg's Conjecture on the Intersections of ×p and ×q Invariant Sets" in Annals of Mathematics, one of the top journals in the field. The work earned him the 2023 International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) Best Paper Award.
Wu earned both his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of Picardy Jules Verne in France, completing his PhD in 2013. His return to China is part of the broader trend of top-tier Chinese mathematical talent choosing Chinese universities over Western positions.
