Huaxin Lin

Huaxin Lin is a mathematician specializing in operator algebras who left his full professorship at the University of Oregon to join the newly established Shanghai Institute for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (SIMIS) as a professor in late 2024.

Lin earned his BA from East China Normal University in 1980, then completed his MS and PhD in mathematics at Purdue University in 1984 and 1986. He held visiting positions at UC Santa Barbara and the University of Victoria in Canada, and served on the faculty of East China Normal University from 1989 to 1994, before joining the University of Oregon.

Lin was formerly a professor at the University of Oregon and East China Normal University. In 2013, he became a founding Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In 2023, he received the Frontiers of Science Award at the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS), together with Gong Guihua and Niu Zhuang.

His main research area is operator algebras and their applications in dynamical systems and quantum mechanics. Professor Lin has broad international influence in the field at the intersection of operator algebras and dynamical systems.

He has published more than 150 papers in leading international journals, including Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Duke Mathematical Journal, and Advances in Mathematics. Among these are four monographs in Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society. In addition, he has authored one monograph in the CBMS series and another published by World Scientific. He received the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2005.
