Haitao Hu

Hu Haitao is a leading mRNA vaccine scientist who gave up his tenured position as associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch to join the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Microbiology in Beijing as a principal investigator, arriving in December 2025 after nearly two decades in the United States.

Hu trained under Drew Weissman, the Nobel laureate and pioneer of mRNA biology whose foundational work enabled the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Speaking to the South China Morning Post just days after his arrival in Beijing, Hu said the career move was driven mainly by personal and family reasons, though he noted widespread sentiment among scientists in his field that the US had become less supportive of biomedical research, cutting funding in areas including mRNA development. "You don't have to explain too much because people would say it's a good choice," he said, adding that China was catching up fast in mRNA-related fundamental research and technological development.
