Summary

Chloé Arson is a geomechanics engineer who left Cornell University to join McGill University's Faculty of Engineering in Montreal, Canada, as one of the university's six inaugural Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada. Her research covers rock damage and healing, subsurface exploration using AI, and the potential of geothermal heat.

McGill announced her appointment, along with five other Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs recruited under the Government of Canada's $1 billion program, on August 27, 2026.

Before Cornell, Arson held faculty positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Texas A&M University. She has received the NSF CAREER and BRITE awards and serves on the boards of the American Rock Mechanics Association and the Engineering Mechanics Institute.

Her research explains and predicts how the subsurface responds to mechanical, physical and chemical stimuli at multiple scales, work she says will help design and control underground energy infrastructure as part of the broader energy transition.
