Ben Weinhaus

Ben Weinhaus, who studies how blood gets made in the bones during development, earned his PhD from the University of Cincinnati and moved to Münster, Germany, in October 2025 for a postdoctoral position at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine.

Weinhaus had begun applying to postdoctoral positions in the US, but found that lab leaders increasingly had to reserve limited funding to retain their current scientists rather than hire new ones. In a piece for the Cincinnati Enquirer, he described the move as effectively a "Dear John" letter to his home country: "Many labs in the U.S. have paused hiring new scientists. This has already put the 'brain drain' in motion, forcing me and others to obtain our fellowships outside of the U.S."

Weinhaus left two cats behind in the US with another student and has been learning German. Asked whether he might stay in Germany long-term, he said it was hard to know, but for now, "I made the right choice."
