Summary
Liang Jie (梁杰) is recognized as North America's leading computer vision scientist, who returned to China in early 2026 to join the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Ningbo as a Chair Professor at its School of Electronic Science and Technology. His career spans groundbreaking work at Microsoft, where technologies he developed were incorporated into Windows Media Video Player and Blu-ray discs used by millions worldwide.
Admitted to a gifted students programme at Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1988, Liang earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering there by 1995. He later built an acclaimed research career in Canada, where as a professor he developed an intelligent sensor system for elderly care to address the challenges of global population ageing.
At EIT Ningbo — a newly established, internationally-focused research university backed by Zhejiang Province — Liang is expected to strengthen the institution's capabilities in computer vision, image and video compression, and AI. EIT Ningbo is led by Academician Chen Shiyi and is funded by the founder of Omnivision Group.
