Gabriela Lobinska

Gabriela Lobinska is a French biologist who left a research position at Harvard Medical School to join AITHYRA, a new institute for biomedicine and AI in Vienna, Austria, as an APART-USA fellow — an Austrian Academy of Sciences programme created specifically for scientists leaving American institutions.

Lobinska arrived at Harvard in September 2024 to study how, over the course of a lifetime, healthy cells change into diseased ones, following doctoral training researching how organisms change over time. After Donald Trump won the presidential election that November, the grant funding her salary was cut the following spring, the White House proposed a 40% cut to the NIH budget, and the government temporarily revoked Harvard's ability to sponsor visas for international researchers like her. "There are places where I could go to do science," she recalled thinking, "without all this." She was one of 25 candidates accepted into the inaugural APART-USA cohort by September 2025.
