Hai Zhu

Hai Zhu is an applied and computational mathematician who left a Flatiron Research Fellowship at the Center for Computational Mathematics at the Flatiron Institute in New York to join Westlake University's Institute for Theoretical Sciences in Hangzhou in the summer of 2025.

Zhu earned his PhD in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2021, advised by Shravan Veerapaneni and Eric Johnsen, followed by a one-year postdoctoral position at Michigan. He then spent three years at the Flatiron Institute's Center for Computational Mathematics from 2022 to 2025, working with Shidong Jiang.

Zhu's research focuses on fast algorithms and integral equation methods for solving boundary value problems of partial differential equations. He is one of four mathematicians recruited by Westlake that summer after long US careers, alongside Yuan Yuan (Syracuse University), Zhongwei Shen (University of Kentucky), and Yiyuan She (Florida State University).
